From Subscriber WSE:
maureen,

the gentle snowfall, seen in street lights, while walking down a quiet paved city street on a moonlit night

seeing young children playing in the snow, making snow angels, working together to make a snowman. gently throwing snowballs at each other.

yes winter can be loved…

wse

Maureen: Well put WSE. Thanks

If I forget to wear sunscreen for a day I don’t have to worry about being sunburned.

All those heavy coats that take up space in my closet are being put to use.

My red boots.

My arms and shoulders get a little more toned from the snow shoveling.

If I forget to shave my legs or polish my toenails no one will know.

Maureen, I’ve lived in Liverpool since 1964. I do love the first snowfall when I am inside and can look out. Especially on a clear night with moonlight. A good fire going in the fireplace. However I did have to commute a distance when I first took a teaching job and had not experienced a whiteout. Long before Dopler and some nights I wasn’t sure if I would get home. OK now I am in Clearwater, on the beach and I don’t have to worry about driving in a whiteout. I did walk the beach today and it was doable in my 2 fleeces. Clear blue sky, still a north wind but it was 28 degrees this morning and there are no strawberriew in the super market . Last year at this dat e it was 77. Maurenn I have to go because my friends have my Bridge hand dealt and they are not patient. I’ll be back soon. Carol.

Good Mornin Maureen, Acouple of Swamp Hollow winter goodies: My driveway is smooth because snow fills the holes. Beaver do not chew down my trees in winter. Finally my golf game is always better when all I do is think about it!

Jenna, LOL. Yes, ditto for me on some of those too. :)

Maureen 01.12.10 at 9:42 am

Yes Carol, I’m sure your Florida Bridge buddies are not so patient while you reminisce about a Syracuse winter. HA.

Denny, that is hilarious and a great way to “appreciate” winter. Enjoy the “Swamp”.

S.U. Basketball is a very good reason to love winter. Clinton Square is much more picturesque in the winter. Also, my Cub pack goes camping in the winter – which is not as bad as it sounds. 30 degrees and lots of snow make for very happy boys!

Maureen-
It only took me until I read #2 to realize “love” is a relative term!

What I do LOVE about winter:
The pristine scenery right after a big snowfall. It creates a beautiful walk in one of our parks (or a cemetery!) And, as already mentioned, roaring fires (with or without books or movies – preferably with).

What do I just “love” about winter:
The dark…eating dinner in the dark, waking up in the dark, spending most of your time in the dark. I need light.
The cold….I am increasingly intolerant of the cold, and I know precisely when that happened. I visited Hawaii 10 years ago over the course of a winter season, once in Oct. and once in February. It was the “twice” that did it. Fell in love…with warmth. Haven’t been the same since. I promptly quit ski club and haven’t gone skiing since. I hate cold.

Which brings me to….I’m heading south to better and warmer weather…way south. So write lots and I look forward to catching up when I get back.

Pat you have a hardy group of Cubs with you! Camping in 30 degrees? Ouch! Thanks for reading and posting.

Don, first Carol and now you? Leaving the nest are you? OK, don’t mind us up here. We’ll just open up a can of soup. (My aunt Marion’s line that showed how little she needed). Have a wonderful trip. Do tell stories of sunshine and warmth. M.

Consider it abandoning the ship! Not to be cruel, but mix up a batch of that clam chowdah you love. Ummm, good.
Thanks, I hope I will, and maybe a story or two will pop up. Keep writing.

What do I love about CNY winters? Telling my friends across the nation that the green spot on the national weather map is Syracuse!

Spoken like a true expert with the maps Bill! Happy to hear from you. Maureen
