The Next Step: Video Blogging

March 7, 2010

What do you get when you cross a blogger with a former TV news anchor?  You get a video blogger.

This is a "screen grab" from video blogging

Not exactly what the builders of my 1926 home envisioned....

Check it out.  Joining us live from my living room, my own teleprompter!   I know, I know, you’re asking what does one do with a teleprompter in the living room?  I’m still trying to figure it out myself, but I promise it will be cool.

The words appear on my laptop below, and get reflected in mirror image on the glass above.

I’ve actually recorded a few video blogs for other websites to which I contribute and the customers seem to like them so far.  Essentially I read their blog articles on camera to attract more hits and encourage visitors to linger; all ingredients of successful e-commerce. The advantage of a teleprompter is I can make direct eye contact with the camera, even though I’m looking at the words of the article scroll on a piece of glass.

Ah, the comforts of working from home; slippers and sweats

Ah, the comforts of working from home; slippers and sweats

It’s just like the multi-million dollar operations at television stations only mine was assembled in my living room for multi-million dollars less.  For example, my online mentor Rich Hill got me started with a computer he picked up at the recycling center after someone threw it away.  My handyman Mike built the stand with $35.00 worth of lumber.  At the moment I use my daughter Natalie’s point and shoot camera because my own point and shoot won’t sync with any editing software.   Whenever I get stuck with technical issues I enlist my techno geek 17 year old son Christian,  or Andreas my Swiss Ph.D. graduate student in Information Technology who occupies the guest room in my attic.  I’ve got an entire professional network right in my own home.

I’m still thinking of ways I can use video on my own blog.  What do you suggest I do?

Maureen,
I am glad to see your teleprompter is up and running. My suggestion is you just go to one of the local news websites and just read us the local news, just like the old days.I hope you can do the weather.Partly sunny/Partly cloudy and 50% chance of rain and snow is all you have to say,we will get the rest of it.When can we expect to see you live?At Noon or 6pm?I think this will be exciting and fun for everyone.Just please do us a favor and don’t broadcast in high volume like those crazy tv commercials do,Although we never heard you yell before.I will be looking for the first video and I am sure you already have a great story to tell us. Since I started visiting your blog I cancelled the Post-standard, And now your video blogging,I think the television will be next to go.

Maureen 03.07.10 at 9:28 pm

Mike, Hahahaha. You make me laugh. But don’t cancel the Post Standard. We need a good paper in this town and those guys are good. Thanks again.

I love seeing your pup flying over the back of the sofa in the one photo :)

Maureen-
Well, the slippers are cute!
Your empire is growing…right into your house! Didn’t Wayne’s World start like this?
Suggestions? Hey, you’re the one with the imagination. But let’s see…I get the impression the prompter is basically immovable. If that’s true, then you could -
Read your poetry
Demonstrate the operation of the “foley”
But it’s early and I’m not coffeed up yet….I’ll give it more thought when I get out into this gorgeous day…a good walk at Onon. Lake park ought to jar some brain cells, when I can grab a free hour.
Enjoy your day:)
Don

Thanks Cathy, that little guy never lets me get more than two feet away. We’ve got some separation issues at my place. :)

Maureen 03.08.10 at 8:40 am

Great ideas Don. You make me smile. Enjoy your walk, and I just may demonstrate that foley one of these days. HA

Maureen,

The teleprompter is much more than I had envisioned, but it works great!

I just love Mike’s comment above, read the local news and weather on your blog. “Partly sunny/Partly cloudy and 50% chance of rain and snow”
That is a riot and so perfect for Syracuse!

Maureen 03.08.10 at 9:38 am

Yes Rich, HA. We have Mike to thank for that. He even painted it! I agree his forecast for Syracuse is very accurate. I could post that and keep it up every day of the year. :)

Maureen,
Love the idea of you being back “on the air” we’ve missed seeing you every day at 6:00 o-clock. About your teleprompter, is the image from your laptop reflected twice or can you read backwards & upside down ?
Good luck with your new adventure.

Maureen 03.08.10 at 6:01 pm

Hi Will and Arvy, nice to hear from you once again. The teleprompter software allows for two screen images. You see one in the laptop, and then the other is moved to the television monitor which lies on its back and is reflected up at the glass. Trouble is, that would make the words backward, so a special software program called promptdog switches the copy in the monitor so that it appears backward in the monitor but correct in the glass. It’s promptdog.com if you want to see a little demonstration. I searched for prompter software for awhile and this one is the best I think. Cheers, Maureen

Maureen, I was gone for 48 hours and it took me some time to read your blog and responses. Good luck with your teleprompter. I had a great weekend with my Rochester family. My granddaughter had a gymnastics meet at Canisius College in Bufflao. Attended a party on Sat. night with my son’s friends from LA whose parents live in Williamville. Sunday my brother who lives in Lockport had an early St. Patrick’s Day party. Got home today in time to do my Syracuse grandchildren. Sun is out, roads are dry and I am good to go. My granddaughter here will be dancing for St. Patrick’s Day events. This is my favorite tme of year. Carol

Good Mornin Maureen, Glad I read this telepromter thing you got . It kinds of explain me. When I say something it sounds backwards to most people,so, all I need is a prompt dog and everything will be straight. I always had the wrong kind of dogs ,I guess. This whole thing is beyond me but sounds like fun for you. I can understand but don’t always know. See I need a promtdog!

Maureen 03.09.10 at 12:18 pm

Denny you are hilarious. Yes, I suppose for some people, promptdog can solve problems beyond reading things on camera. Hahahahah :)

Catherine Nolan 03.13.10 at 6:03 pm

Otto!!!!! :)
I miss you both!

Maureen 03.13.10 at 7:19 pm

Me too Catherine! :(
