Not really. It was the marvelous fortune of having a tenant take the house for the final night of the weekend that sent Christian, Jacob and myself home a day early. It’s for the best really, the school year begins tomorrow and we would have sat in horrible Massachusetts traffic. It feels justs right to be home in Syracuse today.
The big news of the weekend, as you may know, was the confirmed sighting of sharks, including great whites, just offshore at Chatham, at the elbow of the Cape. My home in Harwich is right next door so we make frequent trips to charming Chatham every time we get to the Cape.
Two nights ago I took the boys to the scenic overlook across from the Chatham Light to show first-timer Jacob the location of all the fuss. With the wildfires fizzling out in California and days to go before President Obama poisons the minds of our children by telling them to work hard in school before he pulls the plug on Grandma and converts to Islam, the sharks off Chatham made big news this quiet holiday weekend.
My sister Susan tweated from South Carolina “watch out for the sharks”, and I’m happy to report that even if the idea of swimming among the gray seals until we all got eaten sounded appealing, we couldn’t get close enough to the beach to try. Everyone on the Cape had the same idea. I’ve never seen the small overlook more mobbed. Five minutes of that and like everyone else in the U.S., the closest I got to all the action was the TV in my kitchen that night.
My friend Carrie and I chatted by phone throughout the morning, so all I have to relay on this blissful Labor Day is her latest recipe she shared with me which I just made and ate for lunch. Rod Wood, also from 9 WSYR stopped by on his scooter but declined a plate. Rod is featured on the cover of “55 Plus” magazine, a well-deserved honor, even if they did misspell his name. Poor guy has been called Ron for forty years.
Looking for something yummy? In addition to being smart as a whip, beautiful, fun and talented, Carrie is an accomplished and inventive cook. And she makes it look easy. Here’s her recipe:
Grilled Portabello Mushroom “Hamburgers”
Brush four cleaned portabello mushroom caps with olive oil
Grate 1 1/2 cups Parmesiano-reggiano cheese and combine with 1 Tbl. chopped fresh thyme
Grill mushroom caps, inside up. When the mushrooms are softened, spoon cheese and thyme mixture inside cap and close the grill.
Cut in half, the long way, artesan bread such as stretch bread or baguette, brush with olive oil and grill until golden brown. Place mushrooms between two pieces of the grilled bread.

From Subscriber Bob Baldwin: If you get this, please read on. I have wondered ever since you got through at TV5 what happened to you and what you are doing now. Word had it that you became a lucky wife and retired from the TV business–no one knew anything and no one at the station could really say much. Now, what has become of Donna Adamo who lost her job when Ch5 closed–did she retire or is she still in the business. Any information you can forward to me would be most appreciated. You were the head host, then Donna took your place and now Michel Benny has the spotlight along with that reporter from outside that grew long hair and tries to look and be professional. I guess CH5 is out of business and sold to CH3 due to the economy at present??
Thank you for your anticipated information about these matters. You were so great and Professional as the ‘anchor’ on the Ch5 newscasts. So, please answer when you are able—thank you!!

Maureen: Bob thank you for your kind thoughts. The last I saw Donna was at WCNY where we both anchored a segment of Tel Auc in June. I don’t know where she is now, but many people have asked me about her. She was talented and a lot of fun to work with. I’m sure she’s on her feet somewhere. Maureen
