Packing For The Cape Again

September 3, 2009

It’s time to reclaim the house in Harwich on Cape Cod after a successful summer rental season.  Christian, his buddy Jacob and the two dogs and I will depart Syracuse for the six hour drive in the morning.  It’s been a busy couple of weeks on the Cape with the First Family choosing Martha’s Vineyard for their vacation and Ted Kennedy dying at the compound in Hyannisport, one half mile from where I used to own a rental cottage with my sister and her husband.

Thank goodness there’s enough autumn left to bring in the patio furniture, grill, four white adirondack chairs on the lawn and the American flag hanging above the front door.  I won’t lower the storm windows this weekend.  Instead we’ll steal three more days of summer; a swim at Bank Street Beach, the Chatham Penny Candy Store, pizza for the boys from George’s, and plenty of sightseeing.  Jacob has never accompanied us before so we’ll acclimate him in the true Green family way which means lots of history lessons and plenty of New England food.

I swear it was only yesterday when I brought all the stuff out of the garage for the season.  Actually, it was Memorial Day, which does feel like yesterday.  And before you know it, it will be time to put up another Christmas tree.

No thoughts of that just yet.  We’ll bookend the summer.  Can’t wait to see where the many families stashed stuff this time.  One September I noticed a floor lamp missing from one of the bedrooms.  I wondered who would take a floor lamp from a vacation home, until I discovered it inside the closet of a different bedroom!

What novelties await me this time?

Maureen, have a great weekend. It should be beautiful on the Cape. Hope you get to see a sunset over the bay. Eat lots of good seafood. Carol

Hi-
I was wondering when you would return to “close up.” I envy you of course. Eat some lobstuh…oh yeah.
I’ve never done the Cape after Labor Day..something still on the list. My perception is that weather is still very nice, crowds are gone for the most part, yet everything is still open. Perfect.
Have a great time.
Don
