Christian Checks In

July 14, 2010

Christian’s trip to Italy with the Shapperts of Dewitt is just over two weeks old now and as I expected, I didn’t hear from him until he ran out of money.  Here is the latest digital back and forth between us.

Hey mom.  Just checkin in.  I only have 70 euros left and all I got was some candy, a few drinks and a gift for you and the Schoonmakers and lunch for all of us at a cafe.  So i was wondering if there was any way you could transfer 80 dollars to last me the rest of the week.  I still need to get dad a gift and something for myself.  And do you have any suggestions for a gift for dad?

Today we went to this beach really close to the house right next to this castle and I was diving off of this bridge into the water.  It was frikin badass.  I’d send more pictures but I can’t get internet on my laptop since there’s no wereless internet around.

Tomorrow we’re going on a day trip to Pompeii. Excuse my terrible spelling but the spell check only corrects italian and the keyboard is whacked here. Love, Christian

Never mind my feelings about relying on spell check for spelling and punctuation in any language, but here was my response:

Sure honey, I’ll do $150.00 for you.  Get something good for yourself.  Enjoy the ruins, but please don’t add to the artwork on the walls.  Can’t wait to see you this weekend.

Maureen, another priceless Email. Christian sounds like a great kid. Love the fact that he asked you for an idea for his Dad’s gift. Enjoy your youngest.

How sweet!

My husband left for Italy today. My son is tracking him on the flight tracker every step of the way. We are so excited that after a 20 year hiatus he is going back to his birthplace! We better hear from him before he needs $$. :)

You wanna adopt a 49 year old kid? Just kidding, I wish my parents were as nice as you. I wanted to borrow a dollar from my father and I had to sign a ledger and promise to pay it back with intrest.. Sounds like Christian is having the time of his life even if he is a couple euros short.

Maureen-
Seeing as a Euro is only worth about 75 cents, you may hear from him again…soon! You’ve been to Pompeii sounds like? You’re right, you don’t want him to be adding to the “artwork!”

Don, yes, I’ve been to Pompeii and it’s incredible. You too? We seem to hit all the same global spots you and I. Haven’t heard from Christian again. He returns tomorrow, but I checked his account two days ago and it was $0. Hope he’s not looking to buy a hot dog in the airport on the way home…

Yes, I’ve been there. It is fascinating. In addition to the frescoes, one example of the “artwork” displayed in one of the restored buildings was duplicated in many, many buildings throughout the city they said. But then, it was a seaport. Busy town!

I find it incredible that they just “lost” the place…didn’t anyone make a map?

Are we globally linked? If you can also say yes to Germany, Austria, Ireland, Hawaii, USVI, and Canada (but everyone’s been there) then we are and can resurrect the kindred spirits thing.

Hi Don, no surprise to me that you’ve been there. That’s how the subjects of these articles go, don’t they? HA. I know what you mean about the maps, but maybe in A.D. 79, there weren’t too many copies?
